:: Interested in mountain biking? (14 December 2004)
If the answer to the above question is yes, check out what the Auckland Mountain Bike Club calls the "Manukau Harbour Hop". This ride takes in some nice views of the Manukau Harbour, and the off-road parts include the 4km Pikes Point rideway along the back of Onehunga, the old Mangere Bridge, ARC managed Ambury Park and a hill-climb up Mangere Mountain.

The ride starts at the waterfront on Kiwi Esplanade, Mangere Bridge (with plenty of parking available). It takes in Ambury Park, Ambury Road, Mangere Mountain (from Taylor Road), and continues through Mangere Bridge Township and over the old Mangere Bridge. At the other end of the old bridge, it turns onto the boardwalk onto the Pikes Point Rideway. Having completed the rideaway, turn back to Mangere Bridge to complete the "Hop".

:: Draft dog policy stirs emotions (24 July 2004)
The draft policy on dog control in Manukau City is stirring up emotions. This is not only obvious from the letters to the editor in local newspapers, but also from the recent protest on Kiwi Esplanade on Sunday 18 July by many dog owners. The proposed policy allows dogs under control off-leash only in specific areas, including Mangere Mountain (excluding sports fields, playground and Interpretation Centre); Waterlea Reserve; Hastie Avenue Reserve; Waterfront Road Reserve.

Prohibited areas in Mangere Bridge include Ambury Farm and adjacent foreshore (except the loop road which is on-leash); and Kiwi Esplanade and adjacent beach. A dog ban is proposed for Kiwi Esplanade because of the wildlife, especially birds. Val Payne was present at the protest and her story can be read [here].

June 2004

:: Naomi and Bill Kirk Park (12 June 2004; updated 7 July 2004)
The Manukau City Council will rename the Coronation Road Reserve the "Naomi and Bill Kirk" Park. The naming of the park acknowledges the major contribution Naomi and Bill Kirk have made to the Mangere Bridge Community.

Val Payne was at the opening and shares her impressions:
The naming of the Naomi and Bill Kirk Park recognises the huge input that this family has put into the Bridge Village over many decades. It was blowing a howling gale on 2 July but the Parks department had erected a couple of canvas tent-top structures to keep any rain off. The Kirk family, local people who had helped to plant out the gardens, and friends who had supported the Kirk family in various ventures through the years, were invited. Sir Barry Curtis spoke in glowing terms of the huge contribution this couple had made in so many ways to the betterment of all who live in Mangere Bridge. The Mangere Bridge Library hosted a cup of tea after the ceremony so that people could mingle and chat, and thaw out.

:: Know history behind your street name? (6 June 2004)
Do you know why your street has that name? The Mangere Historical Society has found out information about several of them, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Does anyone have any information about the following: Abiru, Alderman, Alderson, Banbury, Bede, Betula, Bingara, Blake, Cameo, Carver, Chippingdale, Claresholm, Dunstall, Freda, Fuiamanu, Harriette, Hocken, Kambalda, Koremako, Leeson, Macky, Mona, Morewood, Nadine, Nicola, Norana, Quennell, Regalwood, Windrush, Wood and Yorkton. MYMBC members become film stars for a day (5 June 2004)
The Manukau Yacht &Motor Boat Club (MYMBC) was recently transformed for one day into a 1950s RSA for the filming of a food advert. Senior Club Committee members, supported by RSA members, traveled back in time to provide an authentic atmosphere. Not difficult considering the fact that the MYMBC dates back to 1891!

For more information about the MYMBC, and their very 21st century approach to racing, and teaching juniors to sail, click [here].

:: Council adopts Alcohol Ban Bylaw (2 June 2004)
The Manukau City Council has adopted a new bylaw to ban drinking in public places from 1 July 2004. This ban affects areas such as playgrounds, car parks, skateparks, some town centres, parks and beaches.

The alcohol ban will be used to target drunkenness and disorder but is not intended to target people who responsibly consume alcohol in a public place. So you can still enjoy a picnic with a quiet drink in Kiwi Esplanade reserve, without fear of being arrested.
